Riveting observational and experimental documentary, GREEN JAIL (2021) was filmed over the course of 4 years on Iriomote Island, Okinawa Japan—an island that once was a notorious coal mine before World War II. Grandma Hashima Yoshiko lived on the island since 1937 after being adopted by Yang’s family with the intention of becoming the ‘child bride’ for the family.
Grandma Hashima married the first son of Yang’s family. Tragedy struck when the husband passed away, leaving her to care for the family alone. Facing the fate similar to the miners, she is constrained on the island either by choice or by force. Can she and the miners overcome the feeling of isolation and alienation on the island? Which island can they really call it home?
