The 6th Taiwan Film Festival in Australia: Short Film Competition winners announcement!

The 6th Taiwan Film Festival in Australia Short Film Competition winners goes to Zhang Bu-Yi's BOYS ON THE BRIDGE for Best Narrative Short Film and Tsai Shiu-Cheng's A NIGHT WITH MOOSINA awarded for Best Animation Short Film. And Kung Wan-Hsiang's A BEAUTIFUL SUMMER NOON received the Honourable Mention Award.

The Short Film Competition of this year’s edition received over a hundred submissions from both Taiwan and Australia. To accommodate the vast and diverse number of entries, the competition was split into two categories for the first time: Narrative Short and Animation Short, with each winner receiving a prize of AUD 1,000. The judging panel included Corrie Chen, director of the Australian mini-series NEW GOLD MOUNTAIN; Arvin Chen, writer and director of MAMA BOY; and Lee Yi-Fang, director of LITTLE BLUE, who collectively discussed and selected the winners of this year’s competition.

The Narrative Short Film Award was awarded to Zhang Bu-Yi's BOYS ON THE BRIDGE. Set against the background of the Nangang Bridge incident in Yilan, the film uses long takes to portray the confusion of rural Taiwanese youth, carrying on the essence of Taiwanese cinema's realism. The judges unanimously praised the film, with Lee Yi-Fang expressing high expectations for Zhang's future works. Additionally, the judging panel awarded Kung Wan-Hsiang's A BEAUTIFUL SUMMER NOON with a Honourable Mention Award. This simple family drama revolves around the theme of "absence," conveying a profound emotional impact.

This year's festival introduced the Best Animation Short Film category, and the awarded to Tsai Shiu-Cheng's A NIGHT WITH MOOSINA. The judges noted that the work demonstrated exquisite animation skills at an international level and incorporated elements of the Taiwanese folklore "Moosina," creating a magical and delicate atmosphere reminiscent of Studio Ghibli's works.

The Taiwan Film Festival in Australia screenings in Sydney concluded on July 23rd, but the event will continue its tour to Melbourne, Canberra, Brisbane, and Hobart. Audiences are encouraged to seize the opportunity to purchase tickets and not miss out. The festival covers nearly forty screenings across the country, including nine premieres of feature films, a Filmmaker in Focus on Taiwanese director Arvin Chen, and a series of extended industry circle, and post-screening Q&A sessions.
