The 71st Sydney Film Festival will take place from 5 to 16 June 2024. This year's program features more than 200 films from across 60 countries. We are thrilled to highlight our top 8 picks of extraordinary films you shouldn't miss.
《男孩奇幻夜 TAYAL FOREST CLUB》
去年透過《哈勇家》榮獲金馬獎最佳新導演的陳潔瑤,今年很快地又推出了新作品。這次的短片《男孩奇幻夜》(TAYAL FOREST CLUB),講述台灣原住民族泰雅族男孩的成長故事。兩位年輕的泰雅族男子在面對環境的變遷與歸屬感,透過與土地的教導和祖靈的連結,重新找回立足點。
短片《男孩奇幻夜》將與莎拉·瑪格莉特·奧斯卡(Sara Margrethe Oskal)導演的長片《ELLOGIERDU – THE TUNDRA WITHIN ME》(2023)將在雪梨影展共同放映。《男孩奇幻夜》同時也是雪梨影展首屆原住民族獎項競賽的10部入圍作品之一。
《男孩奇幻夜》是互惠計劃(Reciprocity Project)的作品之一,此單位為支持原住民創作者透過電影、攝影與Podcast等來講述全球原住名的文化價值與社會議題等。
Golden Horse Best New Director winner Laha Mebow (GAGA, 2023) presents a brand new short film, TAYAL FOREST CLUB, in collaboration with the community partner and associate producer Limuy Asi. This coming-of-age tale from Taiwan's Indigenous Tayal group follows two young Tayal men as they find their footing, reconnect with the land, and learn the lessons it has to offer.
Filmed in the village and forest of Pyanan. This forest marks the central point from which Tayal ancestors migrated more than a thousand years ago. TAYAL FOREST CLUB will screen together with ELLOGIERDU – THE TUNDRA WITHIN ME (2023), directed by Sara Margrethe Oskal. TAYAL FOREST CLUB is one of the 10 films competing for the inaugural First Nations Awards at the Sydney Film Festival.
TAYAL FOREST CLUB is part of the Reciprocity Project, a global storytelling movement supporting Indigenous creatives telling stories of hope, made within their communities, via film, photography, and podcasts.
《快一秒的他 ONE SECOND AHEAD, ONE SECOND BEHIND》
由山下敦弘執導的《快一秒的他》(2023) 改編自台灣的浪漫喜劇片《消失的情人節》,以獨特的敘事手法巧妙地玩轉了故事中的時間與命運。當一個“令人失望的帥哥”生活在比其他人快一秒的時間線上,遇見了一個生活慢了一秒害羞女孩時,兩個孤獨靈魂之間甜美、尷尬、而浪漫的邂逅帶來了一場發人深省的觀影體驗,探討了人生中的得與失。
ONE SECOND AHEAD, ONE SECOND BEHIND (Nobuhiro Yamashita, 2023) features a unique narrative that masterfully plays with time and destiny, which is adapted from the Taiwanese romantic comedy film MY MISSING VALENTINE. When a “disappointing handsome guy” who lives in a time frame one second ahead of everyone meets a shy girl who lives one second behind, the sweet, awkward, and romantic encounter between two lonely souls creates a thought-provoking cinematic experience that explores the gains and losses in live.
《黑箱日誌 BLACK BOX DIARIES》
《黑箱日誌》(2024)由伊藤詩織執導,拍攝了自己整整五年多,以第一人稱手法記錄了她被一名有權勢的媒體人物性侵後、訴諸正義卻屢屢受阻的經歷。儘管在訴訟進行的五年期間,伊藤面臨了無止盡的質疑和網絡騷擾,但她仍堅定不移地挑戰深植於日本社會的父權規範,揭露隱藏的不公現象。《黑箱日誌》不但在日舞影展世界首映,後續也持續在許多知名影展放映。絕對是不可錯過這部勇敢揭發許多驚人真相的紀錄片!
BLACK BOX DIARIES (2024), directed by Shiori Itō, is a powerful documentary that chronicles her own harrowing experience of being sexually assaulted by a powerful political figure, as detailed in her 2017 book BLACK BOX.
Acclaimed at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival, BLACK BOX DIARIES delivers a raw and fearless story that deserves to be seen. The film serves as both a personal narrative and a scathing critique of Japan's outdated sexual assault laws. Despite facing relentless skepticism and online harassment over the five years of litigation, Itō's unwavering determination to challenge patriarchal norms and uncover hidden injustices is palpable.

ALL WE IMAGINE AS LIGHT (Payal Kapadia, 2024) is the first Indian film to appear in the Cannes Competition within 30 years and won the Grand Prix Prize. Following two women in Mumbai who are frustrated in their love lives but remain hopeful, this film dives deep into the blurred lines between dreams and reality, while also reflecting women's challenges in the modernity of Mumbai, offering a visually stunning and immersive experience.

《HOUSE OF THE SEASONS》
另一部不可錯過的作品是由吳政民 (오정민) 執導的《HOUSE OF THE SEASONS》(장손)(2023),在釜山國際影展上獲獎包括最佳獨立電影、攝影獎、Aurora Media Award 與Vision Awards。故事聚焦在經營豆腐工廠的韓國三代家庭,因家族繼承而產生的分歧。作品透過優雅細膩的鏡頭,拍攝出許多傳統儀式與鮮明的文化色彩。
Awarded at the Busan International Film Festival, HOUSE OF THE SEASONS (2023) by Oh Jung-min is another gem to watch. The story revolves around a year in the life of a Korean family running a tofu factory. Through the conflict between three generations over family inheritance, the director presents a sincere exploration of time and relationships between family members, which is complemented by elegant cinematography. The depiction of traditional rituals held in different seasons not only weaves the narrative in a harmonious manner, but also infuses the film with cultural features.

《從今以後 ALL SHALL BE WELL》
楊曜愷導演的新作《從今以後》(2024)在柏林影展榮獲泰迪獎,同時也擔任今年香港國際影展的開幕片。 故事描繪了一位年長的香港女同在伴侶突然去世後,意外發現身邊的家人們陸續展露出許多私心和不停等的對待。楊導驚人地呈現了每位角色內心豐富的情感,從溫馨天密到掙扎背叛。同時,該片探討了香港法律對同性婚姻的限制,引起了人們對老年 LGBTQ+ 族群不穩定境遇及相關社會議題的關注。
ALL SHALL BE WELL (2024), directed by Ray Yeung, is the winner of 2024 Berlin International Film Festival Teddy Award and Hong Kong International Film Festival opening film. The film portrays an elderly Hong Kong lesbian facing a life crisis after the sudden death of her partner. By presenting the life of a female couple who have been together for over forty years, the director explores the restrictions of laws on same-sex marriage in Hong Kong, which highlights the precarious situation of the aging LGBTQ+ population while drawing attention to relative social issues.

《狗陣 BLACK DOG》
導演管虎最新作品《狗陣》,在第 77 屆坎城影展榮獲「一種注目」單元獎,演員陣容包括彭于晏、佟麗婭、賈樟柯、張譯、周游。故事發生在中國西北部戈壁沙漠邊緣,剛出獄的二郎(彭於晏 飾)返回家鄉。在為當地巡狗隊工作,清除奧運會前城鎮裡的流浪狗時,拯救了一隻流浪黑狗,兩個相處,讓彼此都找到新的生活力量往前走。
導演管虎說:「作為個體靈魂,什麼樣的力量讓他們堅持並幫助他們生存下去?這群人激發了我創作這部電影的靈感。」導演管虎希望拍攝那些被國家經濟發展所遺忘的日常生活。
BLACK DOG, directed by Guan Hu, won the Un Certain Regard award at this year’s Cannes Film Festival. On the edge of the Gobi Desert in Northwest China, Lang returns to his hometown after being released from jail. While working for the local dog patrol team to clear the town of stray dogs before the Olympic Games, he forms an unexpected bond with a black dog. It is an opportunity for the director to film the daily lives of those left behind by the industrial development that is driving the country’s economy.

《風流一代 CAUGHT BY THE TIDES》
多次榮獲國際影展大獎的知名導演賈樟柯最新作品《風流一代》,入圍今年坎城影展的金棕櫚獎競賽。《風流一代》設定在中國,從2000年代初至今,講述了一對情侶享受城市中的一切,直到有一天,其中一方不告而別。不久之後,女方決定踏上尋找他的旅程。
CAUGHT BY THE TIDES, directed by the multi-award-winning director Jia Zhangke, is in competition for the Palme d'Or at this year’s Cannes Film Festival. Set in China, from the early 2000s to the present day, the film follows Qiaoqiao and Bin as they enjoy all that the city has to offer, singing and dancing. Until one day, Bin decides he wants to try his luck in a bigger place than Datong and leaves without notice. Some time later, Qiaoqiao decides to embark on a journey to find him.
“The film’s larger narrative is the march of time itself. The director uses the passage of time to review his own history in cinema. The film is at its best when it is giving us a clean, beautifully cinematographic frame, which Jia never struggles to do, regardless of where we are in the timeline. Zhao Tao can do so much with her eyes — even when she wears an N95 mask. Her performance anchors the film.” –– DEADLINE
